To prepare for the event, provincial departments, sectors, localities, and related units are actively deploying preparations to ensure a safe and professional championship.
Inception in 1958 in Hanoi made the Tiền Phong Marathon a pinnacle race and a premier goal for domestic runners. The opportunity to compete on the same track with top national runners serves as a compelling incentive for amateur athletes to register.
According to schedule, the Tiền Phong Marathon - Điện Biên Discovery 2026 will run over three days, from December 31, 2026 to January 2, 2027 in Điện Biên province. Co-organized by the People’s Committee of Điện Biên province and Tiền Phong Newspaper, the event promises to serve as a New Year gathering for thousands of domestic and foreign athletes.
Themed “Legendary Epic Song”, the Tiền Phong Marathon - Điện Biên Discovery 2026 is not merely a sports meet but a journey linking heroic history with contemporary aspirations. Each stride across Điện Biên routes pays homage to forebears who forged the historic Điện Biên Phủ Victory that “resounded across the five continents and shook the earth,” while inspiring participants to push personal boundaries toward a healthy and ambitious community.
Organized as an expanded provincial-level race, the competition is open to all Việt Namese citizens and foreign nationals meeting race regulations. The organizing board expects around 5,000 runners, encompassing elite athletes, amateur domestic participants, and running enthusiasts from abroad. The championship features four distances: 5km, 10km, 21km, and 48km, catering to diverse participant segments.
Race routes are designed to pass famous landmarks tied to the Điện Biên Phủ Victory, blending historical relics, distinctive cultural spaces, and scenic landscapes such as Pá Khoang Lake, Mường Thanh valley, and scenic roads across Điện Biên province. Alongside official competitive distances, a companion run will launch to promote communal sports habits, drawing an estimated 5,000 cadres, civil servants, public employees, laborers, students, youth unionists, armed forces personnel, and local citizens to create a lively New Year atmosphere.
In preparation for the Tiền Phong Marathon - Điện Biên 2026, track surveys and athlete safety measures have received priority attention from the Organizing Board. Race routes have undergone repeated field surveys in coordination with specialized agencies and functional forces to inspect traffic junctions and road sections with potential safety hazards for proactive handling.
Concurrently, the Organizing Board has developed organizational plans tailored to race scale, runner numbers, and local conditions. Scenarios account for weather developments to guarantee athlete safety and ensure uninterrupted operations during emerging incidents.
Traffic control, medical care, security and order, and search and rescue along the courses are being deployed collaboratively. Congested areas, intersections, and key points along the route will be staffed with marshals to guide, manage traffic flow, and support runners.
Transportation, accommodation, and logistical amenities for athletes will be finalized soon, aiming for a safe, professional tournament that leaves a positive impression on participating athletes.
Nguyễn Hoàng Hiệp, Deputy Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, stated that preparations for the Tiền Phong Marathon - Điện Biên Discovery 2026 have progressed positively through close coordination between the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Tiền Phong Newspaper, provincial departments, sectors, localities, and relevant units. Organizational plans are being completed rapidly, focusing on safety, facilities, and runner services to ensure a successful and professional tournament.
Ahead of race day, the running community in Điện Biên is enthusiastically training in small groups. With nearly four months remaining, local runners have proactively begun preparations, recognizing that marathon stamina requires long-term conditioning. Beyond physical conditioning, runners have time to familiarize themselves with distances, terrain, and pacing strategies to finish safely with strong results.
Nguyễn Công Thành from Điện Biên Phủ ward shared that having previously run mainly for fitness without extensive race experience, learning that the marathon would take place in Điện Biên sparked his enthusiasm to train early with his group, study race elevations, allocate training plans, build base endurance, and adapt to race distances.
To encourage local athletes and running enthusiasts in Điện Biên to participate, the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism coordinated with Tiền Phong Newspaper on a special preferential policy: holders of a Citizen Identity Card (CCCD) issued in Điện Biên province will receive a 25% discount off published registration fees at the time of entry, facilitating local participation and adding vibrancy to the event.
